The end of this fable appears to be an end when in fact it is merely the beginning. The log house, which seemed so small and so insignificant, is the symbol of the child’s world. There are no parents, no teachers, no outside authority. But, during the story all of these people come to life again in the person of the mother who goes back to the little house with her sad sad heart that she is trying to hold in.

The children are also brought back into being in the person of the two little sisters who are not quite ready to go away, yet are even more afraid than before. After all they have lost everything that was most precious to them.
